Second Opinion Services

If you are reading this page even though you already have an attorney, chances are you might benefit from Aylward Law Second Opinion Services.

There are a number of reasons you might want to look for a second opinion.

1.     You just want a peace of mind
2.     You cannot get a straight answer from your lawyer
3.     You suspect your lawyer is in over his head
4.     You saw your lawyer having a drink with your husband's lawyer
5.     Your lawyer seems not aggressive enough
6.     Your lawyer seems too aggressive
7.     Your lawyer tells you there's no winning your case

Start with number 7. Your lawyer just told you that you case cannot be won. Now what? If your doctor told you the tumor's inoperable—would you concentrate on rewriting your will, or would you ask for a second opinion? You'd ask for a second opinion. Right? Like doctors, lawyers sometimes miss things. Every one of us does. A fresh review just might do wonders. Consider this story by one of my clients, who came to me after all hope seemed lost:

When we contacted Dr. Ilonka Aylward, we were literally at the end of our rope.  About a year prior, my fiance had entered in to a separation agreement with his now ex-wife without the benefit of counsel.  It was an agreement that the ex-wife had commissioned a team of lawyers to draw up, and to say that it was egregious and one-sided is truly an understatement.  It didn't take long for the ex-wife to begin exercising the powers granted to her through the agreement, and for my fiance to consequently realize that he had made a HUGE mistake.  As such, we met with an attorney in our home state of Pennsylvania to see what he might be able to do about the situation.  After reviewing the document my fiance had signed and declaring that it was "without question the worst separation agreement [he had] ever seen," the only advice he felt he could give us was, "Don't make her mad."  We left his office that day feeling that our circumstances were utterly hopeless.  Soon thereafter, I began searching online for an attorney in North Carolina who might have the experience and expertise to help us, and that's when I miraculously stumbled upon Dr. Aylward's website.  Upon reviewing the separation agreement, which was approximately 15 pages long, she identified  one single, solitary sentence that gave us the foothold we needed to go to the court and have the entire matter revisited, which is exactly what we did.

To be sure, most of the time, when your lawyers tell you that the case cannot be won, it cannot be won. But occasionally, a fresh review helps. After all, what's there to lose?

Number 3. A lot of legal work is relatively simple. It does not require you to hire Clarence Darrow, or to pay the legal fees that could feed a small country. Same as in medicine: If you have a cold, you do not need to pay for a CT scan. Trouble is, there are occasions when a common cold—ahem I mean an simple divorce case turns out to be something entirely different. A good general practitioner will know where to turn for a surgical consult. It is the same thing with lawyers. We have been called for appellate consultations, trial strategy consultations, procedural consultations.

Numbers 2 through 6 just go to communication. Most lawyers have to sign up hundreds of cases to support their firms' overhead. Aylward Law limits the number of clients. If we do not pick up right when you call, we generally call you back within an hour.

Finally, number 8. If you ARE an attorney, and you think that you ARE over your head because your specialty is antitrust law, but you got yourself talked into doing a simple divorce, or because you sense there's an appellate problem, and you have never done an appeal, please give me a call.
